Wilma Walker

Wilma N. Walker, 94, of Kensington, Md., passed away this life on February 25, 2013. Wilma was born on May 30, 1918, in Carmi and was the youngest child of William Newcomb and Cora (Skyles) Newcomb.

Wilma lived most of her life in Carmi, and it was always home to her. Graduating from the University of Illinois with a Masters' Degree in 1940, she always considered herself a loyal Illini. Wilma was married to Henry G. Walker on August 9, 1940, and he preceded her in death on September 5, 1980. She was also preceded in death by a son, James Phillip Walker; four brothers, Manuel Newcomb, Herbert Newcomb, Clifford Newcomb, Delbert Newcomb, and one sister, Naomi Johnson.

She is survived by two daughters, Julie Herrity (John) of Arden, N.C. and Susan Bender (Bruce) of Rockville, Md.; three grandchildren, Alan Leach (Michele) of El Segundo, Calif., Melissa Bender (Washington, D.C.), and Rachel Bender (Rockville, Md.); and two great-grandchildren, Dylan Leach (El Segundo, Calif.), and Shane Leach (El Segundo, Calif.) Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 28 at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Bethesda, Md.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Carmi with Rev. Gary Feldman officiating. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Memory Contributions may be made in Wilma's memory to the Friends of the Carmi Public Library and will be accpeted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi who is in charge of arrangements.
