William McGhee

Biography

William D. McGhee, age 88 of Carmi, died early Tuesday morning August 6, 2013 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born April 17, 1925 at Emma, the son of Jewell and Ethel (Carney) McGhee. He married M. Faye Snyder on November 12, 1948 in Eldorado, and she survives.

Mr. McGhee retired from Superior Oil Company. He served our country in the United States Army, 41st Infantry during WWII. He was in the Phillipines and received the Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars. He was a lifetime member of the Carmi V.F.W. He loved fishing and bird hunting. He was a member of the Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Faye; one son, Roger (Sandra) McGhee of Bloomfield, IN; four daughters, Charlene (Don) Glover of Mill Shoals, Paula (Roger) Smith of Carmi, Karen (Jim) Ramsay of Mobile, AL and Marsha McGhee of Pasadena, CA; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Smith; 3 brothers, Hylas, Alva and Lilburn McGhee; and 1 sister, Bertha Howell.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 8, 2013 at Memorial Garden Cemetery with Pastor Mike Greider and Chaplain Mike Fields officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Carmi V.F.W. and American Legion. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of graveside at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi. Memorials are suggested to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons or Hospice of Southern Illinois in care of the funeral home.
