William Richard (Dick) Endicott, 90, lifelong resident of Carmi, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, in Deaconess Hospital, Evansville, IN. He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Carmi, to J. Max and Eileen (Parvin) Endicott. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sue Bates Endicott, whom he married on Feb. 2, 1985.
Dick graduated from Carmi High School in 1943 and immediately entered service in the U.S. Army Air Force where he served as a radio operator in the Pacific Theater of Operations for the remainder of WWII. Upon returning to the United States at the conclusion of the war, Dick studied at Murray State University and then took his law degree from
Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. He was married on Dec. 16, 1948, to Ruth Kershaw Martin who preceded him in death on April 10, 1983.
Returning to Carmi in 1951, Dick worked for two years as a claims adjuster for State Farm Insurance before joining his father and uncle, Cyril Endicott, as an attorney in their law firm, Endicott and Endicott. In later years this became Endicott and Finch when Gary Finch joined the firm. Dick loved people and entered into the life of his community wholeheartedly. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church that he joined in April, 1939 and served there in many leadership roles over his lifetime. Among the other organizations to which he belonged are the V.F. W., the American Legion, the B.P.O.E., the White County Historical Society, the Kentucky Colonels and the Carmi Country Club. He spent many happy hours there on the golf course with his good friends and was a member of the prestigious "Hole in One" club. Upon retirement, Dick and Sue loved to spend their winters in Florida away from all the snow and ice. This also gave him an opportunity to watch the spring training for his favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals.
In addition to Dick's wife, Sue, he is survived by two sons and their wives, John and Elaine Endicott, Carmi, and Tom and Shelia Endicott, Chandler, AZ. He is also survived by his sister, Martha, and her husband, Sam Endicott, Carmi, and his five grandchildren, Brianne Endicott, Carmi, Neil (Anna) Endicott and Evan Endicott, all of St. Louis, MO, Ben (Katie) Endicott, Philadelphia, PA, and Daniel Endicott, Chandler, AZ.
