William “Gerald†Walls, 69, of Mt. Vernon died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 in the Emergency Department at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. Gerald was born August 30, 1936 in rural Mount Vernon, IN, son of Charles and Arizona (Aud) Walls. Gerald was a US Airforce Veteran having served for three years in England at Schulthorpe Air Base. In his early life Gerald worked for Conyers Oilfield Service, Mt. Vernon Milling Company, Dealer for the Fuller Brush Company, Continental Grain and Westinghouse Warehouse. Gerald worked for many contractors through Local 561, including Industrial Contractors for several years. He retired from the local in 1991. He then worked for GE Plastics 10 years and retired in 1998. He was a member of Owen Dunn American Legion Post# 5, a lifetime member of the Mt. Vernon Conservation Club and the M Mens Club where he received the Darwin Rueger Service Award for his many years of service including several years on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. He had served on the Posey County Zoning Board for 3 years and the Zoning Board of Appeals for 3 years. He served for many years on the Class of 1955 high school reunion planning committee. Gerald greatly loved spending time with his grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed fishing, woodworking and walking in the woods morel hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Walls, 3 sisters, Wanda Lee Walls, Helen Wilson and Halsie Hargrove.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda (Ricketts) Walls; 2 sons, Gerald Raye Walls and his wife Michelle S. of Glendale, AZ and Matthew Jay Walls and his wife Gina L. of Mt. Vernon, IN; a brother, Charles Eugene “Gene†Walls of Jefferson, TX; 4 grandchildren, Sarah Camille, Rachel Lynn, Ashley Nichole, and Tyler Matthew Walls; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Monday, March 6, 2006 at Austin Funeral Home, 1330 East Fourth Street in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Dallas Robinson and Pastor Mark Tabor officiating. Burial will be in the Union Ridge Cemetery in Illinois. Owen Dunn American Legion Post #5 will conduct Military Rites at the graveside. Friends may call from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to M Club Scholarship Fund.
