Virginia Mitchell
March 8, 1932 — January 8, 2013
Virginia L. Mitchell, age 80, of Enfield, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at Harrisburg Medical Center. She was born on March 8, 1932, in Mt. Carmel, IL, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Beuligmann) Petry. She married Robert “Gene” Mitchell on February 14, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel, and he preceded her in death on February 28, 2008.
Virginia worked as a telephone operator for a short time, but her greatest joy was being a homemaker. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Memaw.” She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, as well as the Altar Society and Pre-Cana.
She is survived by five sons and three daughters-in-law, Steve Mitchell of Enfield, Dan and Julie Mitchell of Wadesville, IN, Tony and Teresa Mitchell of McLeansboro, Chris and Cathy Mitchell of Enfield, and Greg Mitchell of Noblesville, IN; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jane Steed of Bluford, IL, Nancy and Steve Thomas of Springerton, and Clara and Dean Vaughn of St. Jacob, IL; sixteen grandchildren, Holly Braddock, Ryan Steed, Ashley Roberts, Alecia Hatten, Eric and Kelci Thomas, Jason and Chad Vaughn, Lindsey, Travis, Christa, Matthew, Nicholas, Alex, Kyle, and Jessica Mitchell; eleven great-grandchildren; several siblings by marriage, Lawrence “Bud” Unfried, Helena Luster, Mary Jo and Delbert York, Marie and Bernie Mitchell, Ruth Mitchell, Tom Hannigan; and many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, “Gene”; a daughter, Yvonne; a son-in-law, Michael Steed; her parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Carl; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Alvina Unfried, Frances and Joe Parker, Theresa and Ivan Kirkman, Agnes Petry, and Mary Alice Southard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, January 11, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Enfield. Fr. Steven Rudolphi will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8:00 pm Thursday, January 10, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the rosary being recited at 8:00 pm. Stendeback Family Funeral Home of Enfield is providing the arrangements. Memorials may be left to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of one's choice.
