Thelma Lorine Calkin, age 87, of Carmi, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Deaconess Hospice Care Center in Evansville. She was born March 24, 1925, near Tonkawa, OK, the daughter of Charles Thomas and Mary Alice (McRee) Cain. She married Carson C. Calkin March 15, 1943, at Fort Bragg, NC, and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1990.
Thelma worked at Pee Wee's Grocery and later, Mear's Market for 52 years. Mrs. Calkin was of the General Baptist faith. Thelma loved to bake and shared her pies, cakes, and cookies with many in Carmi.
She is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Pricilla and Harold Holland Jr. of Carmi, Mary Calkin of Ponca City, OK, Nancy Snyder and her companion, Danny Hale, of Maunie, Billie and James Barger of Enfield, and Connie and Ryan Bingman of Carmi; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carson; three brothers, Harvey, Manford and Andrew Cain; two sisters, Maudine Clark, and Maxine Pollard; and a granddaughter, Michelle, who passed away in 2005; and her good friend, Arthur Mick.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 1, 2012, at 10:00 am, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Mike Buckman will officiate the funeral service. Burial will take place in Centerville Cemetery.
