Sylvester Lee Johnson, age 80 of Evansville, died Wednesday morning June 20, 2012 at Good Samaritan Home in Evansville. He was born July 28, 1931 in Yankeetown, the son of Harold and Mary (VanZandt) Johnson. He married Esther Mason on January 11, 1969.
Syl was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea with nearly a year in combat that earned him numerous medals. He was a retired automotive service manager from the Jasper area.
He is survived by his wife Esther of 43 years; sons, Michael (Kathy), Jeff (Lorraine) of Evansville; daughters, Pamela (Mike) Joines of Lewisburg, KY, Deborah Merrill of Evansville and Lisa (Greg) Burgdorf of Velpen, IN; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brothers, Marvin (Jan) Johnson of Kansas, Victor Harrison of Evansville; sisters, Doris VanZandt and Bonnie (Ron) Greene all of Chandler.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brad Johnson; 1 brother, Ron Johnson; and 3 sisters, Myrna Halterman, Karen Watson and Christine Collins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 23, 2012 at the Austin~Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St., Mt. Vernon, IN. Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery in Evansville with military graveside rites by Owen Dunn Post #5. Visitaton will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
