Lionel “Sode” Ackerman, age 73 of Carmi, died Monday August 12, 2013 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born July 15, 1940 in Carmi the son of Ralph and Norma (Patrick) Ackerman. He married Carolyn Murphy on August 24, 1997 and she survives.
Sode worked many years in the coal mine. He loved race cars, antique tractors and anything mechanical. For many years he took care of the Hawthorne Township Cemeteries. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Harrisburg.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; two daughters, Diana Allen of Evansville and Dana Smithpeters of Crossville; three step-sons, Doug (Anita) Koontz of Belleville, Brian (Rita) Koontz of Carmi and Justin Pepperworth of Everson, WA; one step daughter, Rise Blades of Grand Forks, BC; ten grandchildren, Josh (Janette) Allen, Zachary and Abbey Allen, Ron Pepperworth, Trevor, Jeremy and Andrew Koontz, Kyle(Danielle) Rankin, Jesse (Amanda) and, Scott Blades; six great-grandchildren, Aydan and Cade Allen, Jolene and Kadence Rankin and Stephanie and Jay Blades; one brother, Harry (Marilyn) Ackerman of Carmi; nieces, Sharon Hisch, Lisa Cross and Amber Carney.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday August 16, 2013 at the Church of Christ in Harrisburg with burial in Big Prairie Cemetery in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi. Online condolences may be left at stendebackfamilyfuneralhome.com
