Shirley Jean Ziegler, 79, of Carmi died Sunday, September 6, 2015 at 5:15 p.m., at Deaconess VNA Hospice in Evansville, IN. She was born October 3, 1935 in Sedalia, MO the only child of Arthur Alonzo and Mary Jane (Dietzman) Dumsday.

Soon after Shirley graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, she joined the Women's Army Corps. She was stationed in Texas where she met a young soldier from Carmi, John E. Ziegler, who was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston. They were married April 26, 1958 in Bauer County, Texas. After their service, John brought Shirley to Carmi. Carmi became her home, and John's family became her family.

She was Protestant by faith. She had been a member of the Happy Home Hour Unit of White County Home Extension, and she was proud to have been a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Nancy Hays and husband Virgil of Carmi; a niece, Cindy Effinger of Carmi; a nephew, David Hays and wife Andrea of Norris City; a great-niece, Erin Hays; and a great-nephew, Alex Effinger. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Ziegler, in 2008, her parents Arthur and Mary Dumsday, in-law, Erwin and Grace Ziegler, and a special nephew, Stan Hays.

Funeral Services for Shirley Ziegler, 79, of Carmi will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2015 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery near Carmi. Friends may call at Campbell Funeral Home on Friday from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley's memory to F.O.P. Shop with a Cop and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home.
