Shirley Burns

Shirley (Adams) Burns of Carmi, Illinois, died Sunday, December 28, 2014 at her daughter's home in Livermore, Kentucky. Shirley Maxine Adams was born April 23, 1924 in Eldorado, Illinois to the late Dannie and Ruth Carnahan Adams and was married to Aaron Frank Burns on October 2, 1942. She was a homemaker, retired from the advertising department of the Carmi Times, was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Carmi. Shirley was a member of Beta Sigmi Phi Sorority in Eldorado, joining in 1950, and a member of the Laureate Gamma Zeta chapter after moving to Carmi in 1957. She was an advisor to the Beta Nu Chapter in Carmi and narrated several area style shows. Shirley was a member of Carmi Women's Club, was Woman of the Year in 1964 and was the Beta Nu Woman of the Year in 1973. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Aaron Burns, who died August 14, 2013; by two brothers, Raymond Harold Adams and Carol Dean Adams; and by two sisters, Helen Mae Blue and Alice Jean Adams.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Edds and husband, Richard of Livermore; a granddaughter, Shirley Rose and husband, Mike of Louisville, Kentucky; a sister, Mildred Adams Kelly and husband, John of St. Louis; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Carmi, Illinois. Burial will be in the Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado, Illinois. Friends may visit with Shirley's family from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the church.

Shirley's family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the kind and excellent care that was shown by both of her caregivers, Diana Brown and Brenda McDaniel.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the First United Methodist Church, 100 South Church Street, Carmi, Illinois 62821 and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi who is in charge of arrangements.
