“Down below the ground he has dug; trying to make a living for the ones that he loved”.
This was the life of Sherill Riggs. He was born on November 29, 1951 and passed away June 4, 2016 after a long battle with a terminal illness. He was born and raised in Shelburn, IN with his 3 brothers. He shared a special bond and close, life long relationship with his brother, Richard Riggs.
Sherrill was a dedicated coal miner for over 43 years. He was known for integrity, kindness, dedication, and extreme hard work ethic. After a long day at work, he looked forward to going home to enjoy time with his family, a home cooked meal, a cold beer and his beloved dog, Molly.
He took a lot of pride in his daughter, Cassandra Coy. He was encouraging and supportive throughout her life and wanted nothing more than to see her graduate college. He passed away on 6 months before getting to see her obtain her degree. If you were to ask him, he would tell you that Cassandra was one of his greatest accomplishments.
Sherrill is preceded in death by his father, Bud Riggs; his mother, Joyce Riggs; and his brother, Lloyd Riggs.
He will be sadly miss by his wife of 37 years, Nancy Riggs, who describes him as “the greatest man she ever knew”. He is also survived by his daughter, Cassandra, (Attebury) Coy of Carmi; his three other children he was blessed to raise as his own, John (Angie) Attebury of Eldorado, Jeff Attebury of Carmi and Jeri Lynn of Kent, OH. 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 brothers, Keith and Richard Riggs. Like many fathers he enjoyed special times with his sons and was so grateful for Jeri Lynn for all her help during his final days of his illness. They were all very special to him.
At Sherrills request, there will be no funeral or visitation services. However, there will be a “celebration of his life” service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Sherrill would like for donations to be made to further Cassandra’s Higher Education in care of the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 200 S. Walnut St. Carmi, IL who is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at stendebackfamilyfuneralhome.com
