Biography

Ruby Pauline Lewis 93 of rural Enfield, passed away at Enfield Healthcare & Rehab Center on Wednesday afternoon, November 4, 2015. She was born on August 8, 1922 in Mill Shoals Township, the daughter of Luke and Clemmie (York) Foley. She married Merle Porter, who died in WWII, then to William L. Lewis, who preceded her in death on March 10, 1996.


Ruby was a school teacher for many years at several different schools, retiring from Washington Middle School in Carmi. She was a graduate of Southern IL University, Carbondale, earning a B.S. and Indiana State University, Terre Haute, earning a M.S. She was a homemaker and a wonderful cook. She also had a “green thumb” with plants. She was a member of Enfield United Methodist Church; Illinois & White County Retired Teachers Association, southern IL Alumni Association and active in other community organizations.


She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Darrell & Kay (Porter) Lindsey of Alton, two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill & Karen Lewis of Enfield and Brian & Sharon Lewis of Marion; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Stewart & Vaudie Dosher of Enfield, two sisters-in-law, Freda Foley of Mt. Vernon, IN and Effie Foley of Aurora, IL; many nieces, nephews and other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ross Foley & James Foley; two sisters, Florence Foley and Margie Foley Fogelsanger; a daughter, Merle Ann Porter; and 2 infant sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday November 8, 2015 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield with burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home and also from Noon until time of services on Sunday. Memorials are suggested to Enfield Healthcare Center.
