Ruby S. Abbey Akers, 95 of Carmi, passed away Thursday morning May 21, 2015 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was born October 26, 1919 in Enfield, the daughter of Victor and Edith (Skiles) Mitchell. She first married John Abbey on July 15, 1941 and he preceded her in death on October 16, 1978, she then married Clinton L. Akers on June 20, 1996 and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2004.
Love is a common extension associated with the name Ruby Akers. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved her family beyond compare along with a large circle of friends she gathered wherever she traveled.
Ruby was one of the first to graduate from the new high school building in Enfield with the class of 1936. She used her knowledge gathered there to be a successful farmer’s wife and bookkeeper of their business for all their farming years. She enjoyed her winters in Florida, playing Bingo, painting and traveling.
Ruby was proud of the fact that she was baptized at the early age of nine at Jacobs Camp near Springerton. She was a lifelong member of Bethel Methodist Church near Enfield until it closed. Ruby felt it was important to attend wherever she lived. She lived in Fairfield from 1980 until 2010 and attended church regularly there. But most recently Ruby attended church at Ashland Christian Church with her Granddaughter Carmen, as often as her health allowed.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Tom) Prince of Enfield, grandchildren, Carmen (Kenny) Rockett of Carmi and Randy Prince of Decatur; great-grandchildren, Leigh and Jackson Prince; sisters-in-law, Della Mae (Leon) Colson and Ruby Abbey; brothers-in-law, Guy Abbey and Marvin (Frieda) Abbey; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; her special caregiver, Amy Buttry and all of the staff at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and her brother, Mark Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 23, 2015 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield with Rev. Braden Willis and Chaplain Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of Flowers, memorials are suggested to Ashland Church.
