Roy Lee Jackson, 86 of Mt. Vernon, passed away Friday evening September 19, 2014 at Deaconess Hospital, just missing his 87th Birthday. He was born September 20, 1927 in Posey County, the son of Joseph and Georgia (Grooms) Jackson. He married Lillie Mae Bishop on December 18, 1948 at Yuma, AZ and she preceded him in death on March 10, 2013.
Roy Lee had worked in the oil field, and retired after 19 years from B&W as a Boilermaker. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and had been a boxer onboard his ship, winning numerous matches. He loved fishing and coon hunting, but he was an avid Yankee's fan. Most of all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Peggy (Roger) Horacek and Patty Ann Adkins all of Mt. Vernon; grandsons, Roger Horacek II, Robert Shane (Becky) Horacek and Rodney (Lauren) Horacek; great grandchildren, Elise Marie, Ethan Robert, Kaylee Faye and Taylor Grace; his sister, Jeannie (Bertis) Read of Mt. Vernon. He was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter, Lynn Jeffries; brothers, Wilburn and Edward; sisters, Reba Shirley, Ethel Pearl Hendrix, Edna Faye Jackson and Velma Kincade.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday September 24, 2014 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St., Mt. Vernon with Rev. Mike Rynkiewich officiating. Burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time. Memorials are suggested to, The Mt. Vernon Food Bank, Blacks Chapel Church or the donor's choice.
