Roy Doerner

Roy Kenneth Doerner, 90, passed away at 3:13 a.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Wabash Christian Village in Carmi.  Kenny was born  March 19, 1928 in Norris City, IL the son of George S. and Ona (Forrester) Doerner.  He graduated in 1946 from Norris City High School where he played basketball and baseball and acquired the name "Lefty".  He went  on to attend barber school in Springfield, IL. On January 1, 1950 he married Betty Gwaltney. Kenny was drafted into the Army in 1951 during the Korean War.  He was discharged in 1953. Kenny was a long time barber of the community.  He loved his "loafers" and their tall tales.  He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at McDonald's and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carmi. His family was the love of his life.

Kenny is survived by his wife Betty; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jim Taylor of Burnt Prairie; a son, Terry Doerner of Carmi; two grandchildren and their spouses, Misty and Bucky Gwaltney and Brandon and Jennifer Barbre; two step-grandchildren and their spouses, Jimmy and Carol Taylor and Tonya and Ryan Hobbs; six great grandchildren, Olivia and Elizabeth Gwaltney, Gracyn, Whitley, Violet and Caleb Barbre; four step great-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Lee Klum and a niece, Patricia Edman.

Funeral services for Roy Kenneth Doerner, 90, of Carmi will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.  Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi.  Visitation will be on Monday, April 16, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made in Kenny's memory to White County Relay for Life or Residential Hospice and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
