In the early morning hours of January 2, 2017, Roger Thomas Horacek passed from his earthly life into his eternal rest to which he had prepared his entrance by faith.Roger was born November 16, 1948 in Evansville, Indiana, the eldest of four children to Thomas Eugene and Ilse Dorsch Horacek, of Mount Vernon, IN.
He attended the Mount Vernon school system and graduated with the class of 1966 from Mount Vernon High School. He attended Vincennes University and earned a certificate as a linotype operator. The Mount Vernon Democrats employed him in that department until he entered the US Army. He served and was wounded in the 25th Infantry Division in the Viet Nam Theatre of Operation. He received the Purple Heart for his service. He furthered his education by attending and graduating from Lockyear's Business College in Evansville. For a short period of time he was employed by General Electric in Mount Vernon. He then went to the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He retired after serving in that capacity for 35 years. Roger loved his children, his grandchildren and his many friends.
On October 18, 1969 he married Peggy Lee Horacek and she survives along with their three sons, Roger Thomas II, Robert Shane and Rodney Lee (Lauren) Horacek; his mother, Ilse Dorsch Horacek; his grandchildren, Elise Marie, Ethan Robert, Kaylee Faye, Taylor Grace and Ellie Hope Horacek; and two sisters, Connie Jean (Dennis) Angel and Maryhelen (David) Allbritton.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John Daniel Horacek; his father, Thomas E. Horacek, and grandparents, Konrad and Thea Dorsch, and Cecil Thomas Horacek.
Military rites by Owen Dunn Post #5 will be conducted at 3 p..m. on Friday January 6, 2017 immediately followed by a Memorial Service at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St., Mt. Vernon, IN.. Visitation will be from Noon until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Disabled Veterans Organization or a favorite charity.
