     Richard Carrol Griffith, 78, of Herrin, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion, Illinois. He was born on February 18, 1945, in Norris City, Illinois, the son of Joseph Franklin and Gladys Opal (Sanders) Griffith Sr. Richard married Mary Keerbs on June 9, 1973, and she preceded him in death. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Richard worked as a  Corrections Officer at Lockport for over 30 years.. He was a member of the Carmi VFW and the American Legion. Richard enjoyed camping, traveling across the country, woodworking, reading, and listening to country music.

     Richard is survived by his step-son, Donald Jensen of Watseka, IL; siblings, Dennis (Amber) Griffith of Norris City, IL. and Joe (Cheryl) Griffith of Herrin, IL; sisters-in-law, Brenda Griffith of Herrin, IL. and Janice Griffith of Herrin, IL; nieces and nephew, Dara (Greg) Whaley of Benton, IL, Melissa Griffith of Herrin, IL. Angela (William) Holderfield of Granite City, IL, Erik Griffith of Norris City, IL. and Dax (Susan) Griffith of Carbondale, IL. In addition to his wife, Mary Griffith, Richard is preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings, Gerald Griffith and James Griffith. Richard's family would like to give a special thank you to the Community Living Center and the Veterans Affair Medical Center in Marion  for their exceptional kindness and caring for Richard and his family.

    Funeral services for Richard Griffith will be held at  2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City,  Burial will be at I.O.O.F. cemetery in Norris City, Illinois, with full military rites provided by the Carmi VFW and American Legion. Family and friends may visit from 12:00 p.m. until time of service on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Disabled Veterans Association at P.O. Box 713, Marion, IL. 62959, and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City, who is in charge of arrangements.
