Rebecca S. Sherfield, 62 of Carmi, passed away on Thursday morning, January 19, 2017 in IU Hospital in Indianapolis, after surviving cancer for 13 years. She was born on April 2, 1954 in Carmi, the daughter of Morris and Clara Mae “Cherey” (Adams) Burris. She married Eddy Sherfield on May 11, 1984 in Stonefort, IL and he survives.
Mrs. Sherfield was a Special Education teacher at Carmi White County High School for 33 years before her retirement. She enjoyed her painting group and was a member of First Baptist Church in Eldorado where she had taught Sunday School to preschoolers.
She is survived by her husband, Eddy; son Brandon (Mallory) Sherfield of Mt. Vernon, IN, daughter, Rachel (Mike) Haug of Evansville; grandchildren, Bodhi Sherfield and John Hewins; brother, Steven (Cecelia) Burris of Gainseville, FL; sister, Jenny McCubbin of Liberty, MO; sister-in-law, Sharon Burris of Metropolis. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James Burris.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home, 200 S. Walnut St., Carmi, IL, with burial in White County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2017 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Research Hospital in Houston.
