Quittie Mitchell

Quittie B. "Q.B." "Bud" Mitchell, Jr., 92, of Carmi, passed away at 2:25 pm, on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. He was born on January 11, 1924 in Drumright, OK the son of Quittie Byram and Harriet (Young) Mitchell. Bud married Joan Edwards on October 2, 1949 and she preceded him in death on June 19, 2001.

Bud graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1942 and entered the Navy.  He served during World War II as a Gunners Mate Third Class and was Honorably discharged in 1946.  With the family business now including drilling rigs in the search for oil, he began what would be a lifetime commitment to the energy industry.  He was a driller for the original Mitchell Bros. for over ten years, and as the Q.B. Mitchell family efforts expanded to include the production of oil. so did his commitments.

He remained engaged in all aspects of the production of oil, and from 1965 was the manager of production until the properties were sold in 1972 following the death of his father.  He then accepted employment with Sinclair Oil and Gas in White County, and after it was acquired by Sun Oil continued the employment in London, KY until his retirement.  He encountered, lived and survived the complete energy cycle, from boom to bust and all in between.

Bud was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carmi where he was active as an Elder, member of the Recycling Group and Pathfinders.  He was a member of the Carmi VFW and served as Commander-in-Chief from 1963 to 1964 and  was on the Board of Directors at White County Memorial Garden.

Bud is survived by three daughters, Brenda Brackett and Fiancée, Ernest Brauchli of Carbondale, IL, Sharon Reinke and husband Arthur Paul, III of Denver, CO and Martha Cox of Carmi; two brothers James E. Mitchell of Carmi and A. Ben Mitchell and wife Cyndy of Mt. Vernon, IL; four grandchildren, Phillip Mitchell Brackett, Stephen Edwards (Lara) Brackett, Patrick Wayne Cox, and Pamela Dawn Cox; two great-grandchildren, Isaac Morris and Asa John Brackett; sister-in-law, Delores Mitchell of Carmi; brother-in-law, Stanley Ray Edwards of CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joan (Edwards) Mitchell, two brothers John and Andrew Mitchell, his sister Betty Jane Mitchell, and three sisters-in-law Donna Mitchell, Maxine Mitchell and Norma June Miller.

Funeral service for Quittie B. "Bud" Mitchell, 92, of Carmi, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Carmi with Rev. Elizabeth Moses and Mike Fields officiating.  Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden with full military rites performed by the Carmi VFW and American Legion.  Visitation will be on Friday, December 9, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi and from 9:00 a.m until service time on Saturday at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made in Bud's memory to the First Presbyterian Church or White County Memorial Garden and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
