Norbert Franklin Maier, 94, Crossville, died at 8:40 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2014 at his home in Crossville. He was born on December 20 1919 in Carmi, the son of Reuben Anton and Mabel Eliza (Ritsch) Maier. He married Marjorie Nell Willis on March 10, 1949. Norbert was a WWII veteran where six Maier boys served and only five came home. Norb owned Maier Grocery for 30 years, was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls fan, raised homing pigeons, boxed in Golden Gloves, a member of Mallette Flyers Softball Team, raised beagle dogs, worked with Senior Citizens delivering meals until age 91, was "Illinois Senior Citizen of the Year" in 2008, and was a great father and grandfather to his children.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjorie; two sons, Brad Maier and his wife, Becky, Doug Maier and his wife, Susan; two daughters, Brenda Eaton and her husband, Ron and Debbie Ashby and her husband, Jim; eight grandchildren, Paige Maier, Nicole Maier, Mallory Maier, Kelsey Maier, Jason Eaton, Bria Ashby. Shawn Ashby and Trey Ashby; and twelve great-grandchildren, Jackson Eaton, Chase Eaton, Katlyn Ashby, Ellyn Ashby, Erin Ashby, Emma Ashby, Katyaa Ashby, Jimmy Ashby, Jasmin Acord, Julian Acord, Kaitlyn Gill and Cayson Gill. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Johnson, Virginia Iglehart, Evelyn and Clara Maier; and five brothers, Robert "Shug", Reuben "Jake", Joseph, William E. "Bill" and Ronald Meier.
Funeral services will be private. Memorial gifts may be given in Norbert's name to FOP # 249 Shop With A Cop and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi who is in charge of arrangements.
