Neva Hughes

Neva June Hughes, Age 93, of Knoxville, Tennessee (formerly of Carmi, Illinois) passed away at West Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee on January 27, 2018.  She was born in Norris City, Illinois, on August 27, 1924, the daughter of James Earl and Eva Coffman Green.  June married John Eugene Hughes on February 15, 1942.

In addition to being a dedicated homemaker for many years, June worked for 12 years at Sears  and was very active in church and civic groups.  She was active in many facets of her church at the local and regional levels, including several years as Southern Baptist State Directory of GA’s.  Oak Hill Baptist Church in Evansville, Indiana (now one of the largest churches in the area) was started in her basement.  After moving to Carmi in 1973, June quickly became active in cultural affairs, serving stints as president of Home Extension and The Culture Club (where she was named Woman of the Year).

June is survived by her daughter Carol (Jim) Griffis of Knoxville, TN; son Johnny L. Hughes of Evansville, IN; daughter-in-law Brenda Hughes of the Villages, FL; 12 grandchildren,  30 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband John Hughes, parents James and Eva Coffman Green, brothers Stanley and Kenneth Green, sisters Vada Johnson and Iris Green, son Alan Hughes, and grandson Jeff Griffis.

Funeral services for Neva June Hughes will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, IL  Visitation will precede the service at 1:00 PM.  Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Carmi.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in June’s memory to Walnut Grove Church and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
