Mrs. Milburn F. Garrett, 93 of Mt. Vernon died at her home on Saturday evening March 20, 2010. She was born on January 31, 1917 in Sparta, Tennessee, the daughter of Daniel and Sally (Cummings) Mills. She first married Dossie “Toby†Jones and to this union she had three daughters. She then married Alfred “Gramps†Garrett on June 28, 1962 and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Garrett was a laborer and worked in the Shipyards in Evansville building LST ships. She had worked as a cook at the Elks Lodge in Mt. Vernon. While living in Indianapolis, she cooked at the private club Palladium Inc. She was a member of the Eastern Star Pride of the West Chapter No. 45. She belongs to the Galilee Baptist Church in Indianapolis and had worked as a Nurses Aide at the church.
She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Nelda Hayden, Marjorie Jones and Jeff Leftwich, and Mary “Red†Waller, all of Mt. Vernon; sixteen grandchildren, Roger Kirk, Tony Kirk, Rena Johnson, Frank Kirk, Keith Kirk, Bruce Kirk, Gloria Kirk, LaConia Ricketts, Yevette Waller, Kevin Jones, Yolanda Waller, Carlton Waller, Roland Waller, and Monica Waller; 27 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Dossie Jones and Alfred Garrett, three sisters, Mamie Powell, Margaret Nailing and Mary Kincaid, and two grandchildren, Gary D. Jones and Velitta Waller, and two nephews, Walter Kincaid and Barry “Petie†Acuff.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Austin-Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the funeral home. Eastern Star Rites will be conducted at 5 p.m. Burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
