Mary Imogene "Jean" Smith, 83, of Carmi, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 3:14 p.m. at Wabash Chrisitian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born on December 1, 1931 in Harrisburg, IL, the daughter of John C. and Lena Mae (Turner) Cozart. Jean married Lowell Smith on August 10, 1972. She had worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at Tri-State Butane and L & L Plumbing. Jean was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church and White County Homemakers Extension. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening, shopping and Christmas. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching them play ball.
Jean is survived by her husband of 43 years, Lowell; two step-daughters, Cindy (Gary) Harris of Bone Gap and Cathy Smith of Chicago; a step-son, Steven Smith of Carmi; seven grandchildren, Patrick and Kristen Harris of Wheeling, WV, Craig and Shelby Harris of Charleston, IL, and Caitlinn Harris (Jacob Speir), Brandon and Ryan Harris all of Bone Gap; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Tommy and Nina Cozart of Carmi, Ivan and Mary Lou Cozart of Norris City; Ruth Austin and Tina Cozart; a special niece and nephew, Jeff (Nancy) Gowdy and their children, Hannah and Samantha all of Carmi and Jenny (Jeff) Bolin and their children, Whitney Bolin and son, Kash and Maegan Bolin; nieces and nephews Tammy Konsler, Dennis Cozart, John W. Cozart, Sheila Bleeks, Deedra McLain, Chris Cozart, Scott Cozart and Mark Cozart. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Georgia Pauline and her husband, Charles Gowdy; and three brothers, Dick, Jim and Bob Cozart.
Funeral services for Mary Imogene "Jean" Smith, 83, of Carmi, will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden near Carmi. Friends may call on Friday, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home.
Memorial gifts may be given in Jean's name to Wabash Christian Retirement Center for the Nurses and C.N.A.s that took care of Jean or to Walnut Grove Baptist Church and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home.
