Lewis Hertlein, 90 of Carmi, passed away Wednesday evening September 16, 2015 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born August 5, 1925 in Whiting, IN the son of Louis and Martha (Barbre) Hertlein. He married Louise Zimmerman on September 4, 1948 at Henderson, KY.
Lewis had worked as a carpet layer; and had also worked at Arts Grocery and had farmed for several years He was a WWII veteran of the United States Navy and had served on many Military Details with our local veterans until his health kept him from it. He was a member of the Carmi V.F.W. and American Legion. He was also a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Louise; sisters, Stella Whetstone and Lyndel Brennan; nephews, George Wiegele, Danny Ray (Katherine) Hertlein and Roger (Glenda) Whetstone; nieces Linda Minear, Debra Santos and Dawn Brennan. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Comer, Louella Bingman, Cuma Wiegele, his brother Glen “Bob” Hertlein, and nieces Vesta Upton and Francis Baldwin.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday September 22, 2015 at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi with Rev. Roger Whetstone officiating.A private family viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. Memorials are sugggested to Emmanuel United Methodist Church. The Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
