John David Myers, 80, of Carmi, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado, Illinois. He was born on November 28, 1944, in Carmi, the son of Arthur Maurice "Si" and Beatrice Elizabeth (Hall) Myers. John attended and graduated from Deland High School in Deland, FL in 1962 where he had a stellar athletic career. He played center and defensive tackle on the football team and was named an All American his senior year. John was also a part of the 1961, Deland High School state championship baseball team as a catcher. John hit two home runs in the championship game to help lead the Bulldogs to the title. He went on to attend McCook Junior College in McCook, NE on a football scholarship. In 2015, John was inducted into the Deland High School Sports Hall of Fame.
He worked for the Illinois Secretary of State Police where he was an investigator for 29 years until he retired in 2000. After retirement, John worked for WOVSED at the Pride House. John was an avid supporter of Carmi White County Schools and Athletics. He was a huge fan of the Bulldogs and faithfully attended various sporting events over the years. John also served on the Carmi White County School Board for 12 years. He served on the original committee to help establish the CWC Sports Hall of Fame. He was also one of the founders and a key player in helping establish Carmi Jr. Pro Football along with serving as a director on the board.
John is survived by his children, Tara (Randall) Busler of Carmi, IL, Chris (Tricia) Myers of Grayville, IL, and Vanessa (Scott) Kiser of Carmi, IL; grandchildren, Frencheska Robinson, Gabe Kiser, Eliana Kiser and Andi Kiser; a brother, Bob (Pat) Myers of Carmi, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Kamden Busler; and siblings, Ann Bradley, Bill Myers and Beth King.
A memorial graveside service for John Myers will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025. at Newman Cemetery, located at 750 Co. Rd. 1600 N. in Carmi. Following the service the family invites everyone back to the First Baptist Church in Carmi for a time of fellowship In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's memory to the CWCHS Booster Club, and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
