John MIlls, Jr.

John E. Mills, Jr. 92 of Mt. Vernon, passed away Saturday at the home of his daughter in Hazelton, IN. He was born May 15, 1925 in Mount Vernon, the son of John E. and Bessie Mae (Tippit) Mills, Sr. He married Juanita Mae Hutchinson in Kentucky and she preceded him in death on February 16, 1998.

John had worked as a Pumper in the Oil Field for Coy Oil Company. He loved playing baseball and was an excellent pitcher. He enjoyed skating and was a Beekeeper.

He is survived by his daughters, Beverly (Stephen) Knight, Linda (Larry) Snyder both of Hazelton and Twila (Matthew Mosby) Mills of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Jamie Barllett,  James, DeHaven, Michael Shrode, Melinda Shrode, Matthew Mills and Jasmine Mills; nine great-grandchildren, Adrianna DeHaven, Jordan Close, Hunter DeHaven, Brittney Dulley, Brenden Scott Shrode, Riley Shrode, Conner Shrode, Nathan Shrode and Sarah Shrode and four great-great-grandchildren, Rosaland and Cora Dulley also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, brother, James R. Mills and sisters, Verla Mae Andrews, Myrtle E. Ward and Burdetta Fay McCreary.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday December 28, 2017 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St. Mt. Vernon with burial in Old Beech Cemetery with military rites by Owen Dunn Post #5. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Mount Vernon Historical Society for Restoration and can be made at the funeral home.
