John Ross Hillyard, 88, of Enfield, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 1:21 a.m. at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born November 17, 1923 in Saline County, IL the son of Virgil Cleatus and Lenora Elizabeth (Marlin) Hillyard. He married Grace Moseley September 16, 1945 and she preceded him in death August 22, 2011. John Ross was a farmer and carpenter and a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church near Enfield. He also served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and John Gunter of Enfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Loretta Hillyard of Metropolis and Bruce and Kim Hillyard of Norris City; seven grandchildren, Ginger Phillips, Stacy Gunter, Jayme Cowling, Michael Hillyard, Steven Hillyard, Ryan Hillyard and Krystal Gholson; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
John Ross was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Kieser and a brother, Robert Hillyard.
Funeral services for John Ross Hillyard, 88, of Enfield will be Friday, August 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with the Rev. John Gunter and Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery near Carmi with military rites by the Carmi VFW and American Legion. Friends may call at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
