Joan M. Porter, 82, of Carmi passed away at 4:15 p.m., Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born in Carmi, IL on December 30, 1931 the daughter of David Paul and Frances Louise (Setser) Hall. Joan married Ray B. Porter on June 22, 1951 and he preceded her in death on June 28, 2012. She was speech therapist working in Nashville, Pinckneyville and Ramsey School Districts along with being a preachers wife. Joan was actively involved in several ministries including being a peer counselor to ministers wives. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carmi, PEO Sorority and the White County Historical Society. Joan was an artist and loved painting and teaching china painting.
Joan is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Scott Riley of Carmi; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Ray and Tonya Porter of Stockbridge, GA; four grandchildren, Thaddius Shipley, Erin Bale, Kymberlee Porter and Dylen Porter; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Bryce, Madison, Gracie Lee and Kamea; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Hall of Granite City and Vonnie Hall of Carmi. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Thomas L. Hall and a grandson, Nathan Shipley.
Funeral Services for Joan M. Porter, 82, Carmi will be at 6:00 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Carmi with Rev. Beckie Laumeier and Mike Fields officiating. Friends may call at the First United Methodist Church on Friday after 4:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Joan's memory to the First United Methodist Church or the Hett Center for the Arts, McKendree University, 400 N. Alton St., Lebanon, IL 62254 and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi who is in charge of arrangements.
