Joan Campbell, 92, of Norris City, passed away at 1:42 A.M., Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi, where she had been a resident. Joan was born in the rural Broughton area, the daughter of Plenna and Vakel Porter. She attended Wildcat school and Broughton High School. She moved with her family to a farm near Gossett where she met her first husband, Roy Davis, who lived on the adjacent farm. Roy proceeded her in death in 1975.
Joan was a fixture in the Norris City retail community. She and Roy owned the Southside Grocery when Roy returned from WWII. She also worked for Marlin Department Store, the Red and White Supermarket, Lester Kincaid Department Store, and Shopper’s Center from which she retired.
Following Roy’s death, Joan married Paul Campbell, and she and Paul retired to Joan’s family farm raising cattle, pigs, and crops. Because of her love of animals, she always had dogs and cats along with a menagerie of squirrels, skunks, geese, raccoons; basically anything hurt and needing assistance.
Joan belonged to Eastern Star and Rebekah. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Norris City. She enjoyed the worship services, and was very active in church functions.
She is survived by one son, Jim Davis and wife Jeanne of Fallbrook, Ca; one granddaughter, Addy Lerner and husband Matt of Tustin, Ca; a great grandson, Davis Lerner and great granddaughter, Sabine Lerner both living at home; a brother, Sam Porter and wife Mabel of Norris City; a nephew, Tom Porter and wife Pam, of San Clemente; and niece Terri Swan and husband Joe, of St. Louis, Mo.
