Jesse Flanigan, 93 of Carmi, IL died Wednesday June 18, 2014 at the Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon, IN. He was born March 19, 1921 in Kell, IL the son of Florence (Woodward) Meurer.
Jesse had worked in the oil fields for most of his life. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during WWII. He was a B-24 Pilot with the 8th Air Force, 409th Squadron out of Norwich, England. He flew 29 combat missions in the European Theater. He was shot down over Lipsig, Germany and was a POW for 2 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn Cook Flanigan of Carmi; his daughters, Tonia (Jay) Schofield of Greensburg, IN and Cheri (Ronald) Blackburn of Mt. Vernon, IN; 3 grandchildren, Morgan Schofield of Greensburg, IN, Dwayne Hardin of Nashville,TN and Angela Doherty of Mt. Vernon ; 3 great-grandchildren, Austin McDurmon and Grant and Shiann Doherty.
Military graveside rites were held at 11 a.m. On Friday June 20, 2014 at Panther Fork Cemetery at Texico, IL. The Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi, IL is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at stendebackfamilyfuneralhome.com
