Jack Brookover

September 13, 1921 — February 23, 2017

(Noah) Jack Brookover, 95, of Carmi passed away at 12:37 a.m., Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Henderson Nursing and Rehab in Henderson, KY.  He was born in Sincerity, West Virginia the son of Earnest and Tish (Calvert) Brookover.  Jack married Helen Rose Neeley on January 6, 1942 and she preceded him in death on January 15, 1999.  He worked as a pumper in the oil field and later owned and operated Brookover Petroleum.  Jack was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces as an airplane mechanic stationed in Texas.  He was a 50 plus year member of the Carmi American Legion Post #224, a member of the Carmi VFW Post #3851 and a longtime member of the Carmi Elks.  In 1998 Jack and Helen started the Brookover Family Trust Scholarship which awards a scholarship to a graduating senior from Carmi-White County High School. Requirements for the recipient include having been born of ancestors who have migrated to IL from the West due to the oil boom.

Jack was a true lover of life. He was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and he enjoyed watching games with his buddies at the Elks Lodge. He adored children, especially his own grandchildren, Matthew and Laura Brookover, and Jaclyn Spraetz.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in- law, Emily Sue and Erich Spraetz of Henderson, KY; a son and daughter-in- law, Tim and Cecile Brookover of Houston, TX; and three grandchildren; Matthew Brookover of Boston, MA , Laura Brookover of Washington DC, and Jaclyn Spraetz of Lexington, KY.  Also surviving are nephews Christy and Steve Brookover of Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Jack (born in 1947), sister, Betty Houston and two brothers, Chris and Leroy Brookover.

Funeral Services for Jack Brookover, 95, of Carmi will be at 1:00 PM on February 27, 2017 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM.  Burial will be in West Union Cemetery near Carmi with military rites by the Carmi American Legion and VFW. Memorial Contributions may be made in Jack's memory to Snowball Express and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
