Irene Maurer, 95 of Carmi, passed away Saturday October 18, 2014 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was born March 11, 1919 in Carmi, the daughter of Daniel C. and Anna (Winter) Keim. She married Carl H. Maurer on November 20, 1937 and he preceded her in death on February 24, 2007.
Irene had worked at Ainsbrooke Sewing Factory in Carmi until it closed. She loved to quilt and crochet. She had been a volunteer at Jefferson school helping with the reading program. She was a longtime member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and had been a sunday school teacher in almost every class.
She is survived by 1 son, Allan Keith (Cuma) Maurer of Mt. Vernon, IN; 1 daughter, Margaret Ann (Ray) Garner of Crossville; 6 grandchildren, Michael (Gloria) Garner, Kay (Bill) Grunwald, Janie (Tim) Jones, Susan (Jeff) Colson, Jill (John) Gerton and Mark (Holly) Maurer; 13 great-grandchildren, Daniel (Cathleen) Garner, Christine (Derek) Wissel, Jacqueline (Cody) Kunce, Austin Colson, Aaron and Brandon Jones, Patrick and William Gerton, Olivia Gerton, Ashley, Ethan, Aiden and Evan Maurer; 3 great-great-grandchildren, Andi, Nolan and Wyatt Garner. She was preceded in death by 1 brother, John Clarence Keim.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday October 23, 2014 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home with Chaplain Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in Rieb Cemetery near Carmi.
