Howard Ackerman, 88, of Carmi, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 6:53 p.m. at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born January 24, 1925 in White County, IL, the son of Willard Frederick and Lula (Ridenour) Ackerman. Howard married Wanda L. Roosevelt on February 28, 1953. He was a grain farmer, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he was active in the Gold Band Sunday School Class. Howard was also a member of the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. along with the Square-em-up Square Dance Club and Pepperoos Line Dancing Club.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda of Carmi; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Jaci Ackerman of Carmi and Mark and Susan Ackerman of Avon Lake, OH; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Frances Ackerman, William and Patsy Ackerman and Kenneth and Pat Ackerman all of Carmi; two sisters, Lola Smith of Albion and Lula Mae Vinson of Carmi; three grandchildren, Jessica, Katelyn and Tyler Ackerman; two step grandchildren, Dana Quinn and his wife Debbie and Heather Quinn and her husband, Zack Baker; one step great-grandchild, Evan Quinn; two sisters-in-law, Mary and Jim Fenton of Carlinville, IL and Adamae Roosevelt of Carmi; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Roosevelt of Forsyth, IL.
Howard was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Fred, Herbert and Joseph Ackerman.
Funeral services for Howard Ackerman, 88, of Carmi, will be Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Mike Fields and Rev. Bob McKelvey officiating. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery in Carmi. Friends may call at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be given in Howard's name to the Emmanual Methodist Church or Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home.
