Houston Hughes

Houston Hughes, 85 of Carmi passed away at 9:35 a.m. on Sunday March 24, 2013 at his residence. He was born on September 14. 1927 in Carmi the son of Clarence "Shorty" and Carrie (Howell) Hughes. Houston married Virginia Gidcumb on September 1, 1956 . He served in the Navy during World War II and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in agriculture. Houston was a farmer, attended Walnut Grove Baptist Church, and loved playing golf. He was a former member of the Carmi Country Club, American Legion, and Brownsville School Board.

Houston is survived by his wife, Virginia of Carmi; three sons, David and Gay Hughes of Carmi, Bill and Lynn Hughes of Harrison, Ark., and Doug Hall of Houston, TX; three daughters, Beverly and John Keller of Fayetteville, GA, Tina and Steve Riley of Owensville, IN, and Debbie and Jim Stevens of Nederland, CO; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and one sister, Rosa Jean Haas of Jasper, IN

Houston was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Hughes; a brother, Kenneth Hughes; and a sister, Wilma McDermott

Funeral Services for Houston Hughes, 85 of Carmi, will be Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi with military rites by the Carmi American Legion and VFW. Friends may call at Campbell Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until the service time. Memorial Contributions may be made in Houston's name to the donors favorite charity and will be accepted at the funeral home.
