Helen Lucille Behler Matsel, 86, of Carmi, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 4:15 a.m. at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born July 23, 1925 in Carmi, the daughter of Ben J. and Hattie Victoria (Puckett) Behler. She married Ted H. Matsel August 4, 1946 and he preceded her in death October 23, 2008. Helen was a lifelong member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi, where she was active in the Fellowship Sunday School class and the Quilters and Crafters organization. She also belonged to the DAR and American Legion and VFW auxiliaries.
Helen is survived by her four children, Martha (Ed) Geppert of Belleville, IL, Judy (Rob) Coleman of Mt. Carmel, IL, Mary (Tom) Ossowski of Springfield, IL and Jack (Karen) Matsel of Jasper, IN; Ten grandchildren, Brad (Laurie) Geppert, Steven Geppert and Daniel Geppert of Belleville,, Ben (Alison) Coleman of Decatur, Phil Coleman of Mt. Carmel, Katie (Matt) Colman of Pittsburgh, PA, Tim Ossowski of Washington, DC, Leah, Allison and Jared Matsel of Jasper, IN.; six great-grandchildren, Jack, Luke and Elena Geppert of Belleville, Oliver and Ian Coleman of Decatur and Cameron Colman of Pittsburgh, PA; two sisters, Mary Alice Brashier of Carmi and Jeanette Smith of Norman, OK; a brother, Richard (Jewell) Behler of Carmi; and a brother-in-law, Gene Matsel of Carmi. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Ben Joe Behler; and a sister, Rose Nell Questell.
Funeral services for Helen Lucille Behler Matsel, 86, of Carmi, will be Monday, June 4, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden near Carmi. Friends may call on Monday, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
