Harry Edward Barbre, 92, of Carmi, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 11:20 p.m. at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. He was born to William Edward and Charlotte (Springer) Barbre on June 20, 1923 in Venice, Illinois. Harry married Mildred Fern Hart on September 27, 1947.
When Pearl Harbor was attacked, Harry chose to enlist in the Marine Corps for the length of World War II. After basic and special forces training in artillery, he served in Guadalcanal, Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima where he was present for the raising of the famous flag. He earned the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Harry served as Carmi's Chief of Police and owned the Sani Cream in Carmi. Later he was the parts manager at the Chrysler auto dealership in Carmi. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing, drinking coffee with his "buddies" at McDonalds, telling war stories, and using his talent for small engine repair at his lawn mower repair service. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Carmi.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Larry Beck and Sharon and Rex Stallings all of Carmi; three grandchildren, Kara Kessler and husband, Curt, Shannon Nausley and husband, Lex and Jason Stallings and wife, Crystal; and seven great-grandchildren, Kelsi Kessler, Cody, Travis and Kassie Nausley, and Samantha, Sydney and Jordan Stallings. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, and two sisters.
Funeral services for Harry Barbre, 92, of Carmi will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Greg Grant and Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden in Carmi with full military rites by the Carmi American Legion and VFW. Friends may call at Campbell Funeral Home on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to Wabash Christian Retirement Center and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
