Harry Ackerman 85 of Carmi, passed away Tuesday evening May 19, 2015 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born November 29, 1929 in Carmi, the son of Ralph and Norma (Patrick) Ackerman. He married Marilyn Hargrave on December 26, 1953 in Corinth, MS.
Harry had worked in appliance repair most of his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool and visiting at the Carmi Coffee Shop. He played pro baseball to the triple A Level as a member of the Chicago Cubs, but his allegiance was to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. He attended Big Prairie Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters, Sharon (Chas) Hisch of Poseyville, Amber (Alex) Carney and Lisa (Dean) Cross all of Carmi; grandchildren, Julie (Chad) Loughrey, Kimberly Winter, Adam and Ashly Cross, Walker Roser, Lex, Liza and Levi Carney; great-grandson, Jack Loughrey; in-laws, Carolyn Ackerman, Ervin (Alvalee) Hargrave and Reva Price. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lionel “Sode” Ackerman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday May 22, 2015 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi with Chaplain Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
