Harold D. Ericksen, age 85, of Evansville, IN, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2011, at his home. He was born April 1, 1926. in Portland, Maine, the son of Victor A.E. and Edna M. (Dame) Ericksen.
Harold was in the United States Navy for many years, serving in both WWII and the Korean War. He worked for Graflex, Inc., a division of Singer Co., in Washington, D.C., where he worked as a civil engineer. He was the administrator responsible for the remodeling of the east front of the Capitol Building and the construction of the Senate Subway system during the Kennedy administration. He developed and patented a polyurethane tire roller guide to keep noise down in the subway of the building during the remodeling. He had his own office in the Capitol Building, as well. Mr. Ericksen was also the chief engineer and superintendent of the Parkview Corporation and chief engineer and estimator with the Blackwell Construction Company,
He was the Director of Singer Breckinridge Job Corps Center for many years. He also worked at the Green River Comprehensive Care Center, S.W. and Sons Construction Co. Inc., both in Kentucky, and his own firm, Harold D. Ericksen and Associates. Harold was a Mason, a Civitan, a Kiwanian, a Mensa member, and an Intertel member. Mr. Ericksen was a pilot who enjoyed sailing, radio controlled aircraft, and training horses. He had published many technical papers over the years, including “A Horizontal Elevator,†and “A Better Rubber,†and an article in the Virginia Engineer titled “The Wheatstone Bridge,†and had constructed many buildings in the Evansville area.
He is survived by the love of his life, Mary Kissel-Ericksen, of Evansville; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Ralph Titcomb, of Sandwich, Massachusetts; three sons, Mark Ericksen, David Ericksen, and Wayne and Penny Ericksen; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shari Ericksen, and Robyn and Michael Riddle; and many other children that he helped to raise; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.
