George Eugene "Gene" Heil, 88 of Carmi, passed away at 7:15 p.m., Monday, October 8, 2018, at Carmi Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born in Centerville, IL on February 23, 1930 the son of George T. and Lola Grace (Barbre) Heil. Gene graduated in 1948 from Carmi High School. He served in the United Stated Marine Corps during the Korean War. Gene worked at Whirlpool in Evansville for 30 years and was also a farmer. He was a member of the Carmi American Legion and Zion United Methodist Church. In his younger days, Gene enjoyed boating, dancing and camping.
Gene is survived by two sons, Jim (Nancy) Heil, of Melbourne, FL and Jeff Heil of Carmi; companion, Anna Flowers, of Carmi; brother, Wayne Heil of Carmi; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Justin) Carter-James, Jason (Amber) Carter, Andrew, Matthew and Jarrod Heil and Macey Heil and three great-grandchildren, Jace, Kaden and Kinley Carter. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Carter and a sister, Mary Catherine McKnight.
Funeral services for George Eugene "Gene" Heil, 88, of Carmi will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2018 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery in Carmi with Military Rites by Carmi VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Campbell Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene's memory to Zion United Methodist Church and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
