George Thomas Brakie, 85 of Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday evening January 3, 2015 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born February 24, 1929 in Evansville, the son of George Albert and Rosa Lee (Knowles) Brakie. He first married Violet S. Greenwell and she preceded him in death. He later married Bertha Green.
George worked as a safety supervisor at J.R. Short and retired from G.E. in Mt. Vernon. He had served as a Posey County Highway Superintendent and had worked for both the Mt. Vernon Police Department and the Posey County Sheriffs Department. He was a member of the Gloryland 4 Quartet and had served as the youth choir director and a member at the Church of God Mission.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two sons, George Thomas "Tom" (Doris) Brakie of Evansville and Timothy (Tina) Brakie of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Kalah (Dennis) Thomas and Rhonda (Bill) Lewis all of Mt. Vernon; grandsons, Stephen and Ryan (Jennifer) Brakie and 38 other grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Brakie and one sister, Mildred Rowe.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday January 7, 2015 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St. Mount Vernon with Rev. Corey Rash and Rev. Brett Doninger officiating.
