Biography

Eugene Hubert “Duby” Atteberry, 91, of Carmi passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at his home. He was born February 8, 1921 in Burnt Prairie, IL to Jesse M. and Norah (Hon) Atteberry. Duby married the love of his life, Edna LaVaughn Messersmith on February 9, 1943, in St. Charles, MO.

Duby proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps 3rd Amphibious Corps artillery division in the South Pacific during World War II and was honorably discharged on November 10, 1945. After the war Duby returned to Warren Petroleum in Crossville, IL for 18 years before being transferred to Hobbs, NM until he retired in 1985. After retirement, he and Edna returned to Carmi to be with their friends and family and enjoy life. They also spent time in Okeechobee,Fl where they enjoyed crappie fishing . Duby was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader. Duby could strike up a conversation with most anyone and enjoyed visiting about any subject from the oilfield, space flight, gardening, world geography or how to cook the best chicken and ribs on a grill and that “you can pickle anything.” He was a quiet and gentle man.

Duby is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Pamela Jackson and Becki (Larry) Munholland of Healdton, OK, one son and daughter-in-law Brad (Darlene) Atteberry of Littleton, CO; three granddaughters Kim Channel, Mandy Munholland, and Hailey Atteberry; and six grandsons Mike Jackson, Chris Jackson, Greg Munholland, Jeff Munholland, Garrett Atteberry and Jacob Atteberry; one great-granddaughter and three-great grandsons.

Duby was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, brother Charlie Atteberry, and son Kyle Atteberry.

A Celebration of his Life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Carmi. Masonic rites will be provided by Carmi Masonic Lodge #272. There will be a visitation preceding the service, beginning at 9 a.m. Condolences may be left at www.stendebackfamilyfuneralhome.com.
