Elsie M. Gulledge, 96 of Carmi passed away Monday July 4, 2016 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born March 30, 1920 in Herald, the daughter of Walter and Ada (Hill) Merritt. She first married Frank Andrew Churchwell and later married Everett Gulledge, both preceded her in death.
Elsie had worked for the IL State Hospital in Elgin before returning to Carmi and working for many years at Ainsbrooke. She finished her time working as a home health aide for many area firms. She was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries and a member of the Trinity Assembly of God in Carmi. She was proud of the fact that she was a 5 generation grandmother.
She is survived by 10 grandchildren, Steve Seibers, Lynn Warrner, Bobby Bincsik, Barbara South, Donnie Churchwell, Mike Bincsik, Jamie Youngman, Ronnie Churchwell, Angie Bartley and Steven Churchwell; 22 great-grandchildren and 29 great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her sons, Frank Allen and Walter Churchwell; daughters, Wanda Holland and Pat Attebury; brothers, Jimmy, Guy, Wilbern and Herschel Merritt.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday July 9, 2016 at Trinity Assembly of God Church in Carmi, with burial in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the church. The Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
