Eddie Spence

  Eddie Spence, 82, of Carmi passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023. He was born in Norris City, IL on July 6, 1940 the son of Dalton and Fannie (Wilson) Spence.  Eddie married Gail Campbell on June 4, 1988.  Eddie began his career teaching at Norris City before taking a position at Grayville Middle School where he taught History and Social Studies for the next 31 years. In 1985, he had taken up a hobby as a locksmith prior to retirement from teaching.  That hobby became a full time job and  he operated Spence Lockshop.  Eddie attended Plainview General Baptist Church and enjoyed collecting antiques.

     Eddie is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gail; two children, Edie Pope of Murfreesboro, TN and Rick (Kathy Bible) Chapman of Iuka, IL; three grandchildren, Morgan Pope, Jason Chapman and Kristen Chapman; three siblings, Helen Doris Hampton of Carmi, Barbara (Dewain) Kramer of Fairfield, IL and Carl (Jane) Spence of Salem, IL; two sisters-in-law, Ann Leithliter and Carolyn York both of Carmi; and numerous nieces and nephews,  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son-in-law, David Pope.

     Funeral services for Eddie Spence, 82, of Carmi will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Plainview General Baptist Church near Norris City. Burial will follow in Plainview Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until service time at noon at Plainview General Baptist Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Eddie's memory to Plainview General Baptist Church or the Parkinson's Foundation and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home, 609 W. Main St., Carmi, IL 62821 who is in charge of arrangements.
