Earl M. Maurer, age 92 of Crossville, died Sunday morning December 23, 2012 at Herrin Hospital in Herrin. He was born March 4, 1920 in Carmi, the son of Jacob and Susan (Burkhart) Maurer. He married Mary E. Sturm on March 8, 1941 and she preceded him in death on September 8, 1995.

Earl had worked as an oilfield pumper for Sun Oil for over 40 years. He was a 50 year member of the Carmi Masonic Lodge. Earl was known by many local residents for producing the best sweetcorn, sweet potatoes and turnips around. He was a member of the Galatia Methodist Church.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Pam Maurer of Metropolis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Darrell Toombs of Carmi and Barbara and Bill Arnold of Carterville; five grandchildren, Matt Maurer, Todd and Tina Adams, Chris Oetjen and Jennifer Arnold; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Janet Watson; four brothers, Raymond, Carl and two in infancy; and two sisters, Esther Fobar and Amelia Stallings.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday December 27, 2012 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Kelly Cox officiating. Burial will be in Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville. Visitation will be from 9:30 until services on Thursday. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday by the Carmi Masonic Lodge.
