Wilburn Duane Smock, 76 of Carmi died late Monday May 5, 2014 at Deaconess Hospital. He was born March 20, 1938, in Carmi, IL, the son of Raymond T. and Mabel W. (Rankin) Smock. He married Delores Wilson on December 25, 1959.
Duane retired after 43 years from Terminal Operation at Marathon Ashland Oil Company. He and his family operated the Pizza Haven in Carmi and Mt. Carmel. He enjoyed repairing and restoring just about everything. Duane served as a U.S.Army paratrooper with the 101 Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY. He loved helping others and his grandchildren were the joy of his life. He served on the pastors council and was a member of the Carmi New Beginnings Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Delores; a daughter, Kendra (Jason) Williams of Carmi; three sons, Monty (Jessie) Smock, of Mt. Vernon IN, Doug (Kim) Smock of Carmi, and Ted (Donna) Smock of Springville, IN; ten grandchildren, Chris (Charity) Smock, Alex (Kayla) Smock, Meredith (Brent) Shelby, Adam Watkins, Justin and Kayla Smock, Ryan (Emily) Williams, Travis Williams, and Jake and Jon Smock; six great-grandchildren, Hayden and Kylee Smock, Ezra Shelby, Avery and Colt Smock and Hadley Williams; two sisters, Ruth (Ronnie) Hastings of Abingdon, IL and Carolyn June Steed of Carmi; two brothers, Arthur Marian (Jay) Smock of Chicago and Stephen Smock of Coweta, OK. He was preceded in death by his brother, Elmer Ray Smock and a sister, Norma Clark.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 10, 2014 at the Carmi New Beginnings Church of God with Rev. Keith Moore and Barry Steed officiating. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Carmi New Beginnings Church of God Building Fund.
