Dorothy M. Jones

     Dorothy May Jones, 81, of Carmi, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025. She was born on July 11, 1943, in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, the daughter of Earl and Lenora (Smith) Cowan. Dorothy married John W. Russell, and preceded her in death on November 16, 1978. She later married Richard Jones on April 11, 1992, and he survives. Dorothy worked for 13 years until retiring from the Wabash Coal Mine in Keensburg. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, gardening, reading and playing bingo. She loved to travel with Richard.

    In addition to her husband, Richard Jones of Carmi, IL, Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Patty (Bryan) Kieffer of Mt. Carmel, IL. and Debra Brown of Carmi, IL; four grandchildren Alex (Lucero) Kieffer, Adam (Emily) Kieffer, Michael Shutt and Brittany (Alex) Jovanovic; five great-grandchildren, Oliver Kieffer, Leo Kieffer, Andrew Kieffer, Angel Jovanovic and Christina Jovanovic; siblings, Nora Russell of Tennessee and Tom Smith of Evansville, IN. and Bill Smith; a niece, Shelly Russell of Sanford, CO. and her family; and numerous other nieces and nephews. In addition to her first husband, John W. Russell, Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; and siblings Ralph Smith, Jack Dillard, Earl Cowan, Teddy Smith, Marilyn Brown and Danny Smith.

   A visitation for Dorothy May Jones will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, with private burial at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy's memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
