Dorothy Hobby

d. February 1, 2009

Dorothy L. (Jones) Hobby, 77, of Mt. Vernon, went home to be with her Lord at 12:10 PM on February 1, 2009 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, IN. Dorothy was born January 23, 1932 in Mt. Vernon, daughter of Phillip and Mary L. (Guest) Jackson who preceded her in death. Her son, Perry Hobby, and sister, Katie Grundy also preceded her in death. She was a seamstress early in her life and served as crossing guard at Hedges Elementary School for many years before her retirement. Dorothy was a faithful member of Memorial Baptist Church in Evansville. She loved her Pastor, Rev. Adrian M. Brooks, I, her church family and immensely enjoyed her church choirs.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Hobby of Evansville, IN 4 daughters, Donna Davis, Pam (Paul) Kendall (caregiver), Cheryl Stewart and Lori (Huston) McFarland all of Evansville, IN. 2 sons; Roger and Bryan Hobby all of Evansville. 1 brother; Harry (Vashtie) Jones, Jr. of Chicago, IL; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Three aunts, Dorothy Foster, Sophia Thompkins and Rose Acuff and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including Dorothea Ann Samuels and her closest friend, Augusta Martin.

Though blessed with an abundance of loving family members, Dorothy’s heart reached far beyond bloodlines. She genuinely loved each and every person that God placed in her life. She delighted in motherly pride for Lisa, Denise, Yvette and many others who affectionately referred to her as Mom and Grandma. The greatest joy in Dorothy’s life was attending events for her grandchildren and she spent the last several years of her life traveling with them to numerous games, parades, performances and other events.

Dorothy was a strong courageous woman who trusted in the heart of God and waited on His hand to see her through. She continually sought God’s wisdom & guidance in striving to be the best mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, in-law and friend that she could possibly be.

Dorothy enjoyed puzzles, auctions, traveling and family time, but nothing thrilled her more than shopping . . . for anything . . . for anyone.

Special thanks are extended to Brian Darden, Dr. Ahmid Merzahd and her caregivers at Heritage Center during her brief stay there.
