Dorothy Carmi

Dorothy Jean Barr, "Dot" of Carmi passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the age of 81 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi, where she was surrounded and uplifted by Chaplain Mike Fields and family members. She was born April 28, 1932 in Phillipstown, IL the daughter of Anderson and Macel (Tolley) Browning. Shortly after the passing of her mother, she and her siblings were raised at the Baptist Children's Home. Dorothy married Carl Edward Barr on December 24, 1953 and he preceded her in death on March 5, 1966.

During Dorothy's life she worked in many capacities, including bowling alley, waitress and cook at several Carmi cafes and was one of the favorite waitresses. She also worked as a nursing assistance at Fairfield Hospital and retired after several years from the Carmi Township Hospital. During her life she enjoyed traveling, bowling, fishing, playing softball, gardening and was know as one of the best cooks in White County, Dorothy was always up for a game of cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a baby sister, brother, Gene Browning, sisters and brother-in-law, Alene and Jim Page and Betty and Gene Reeder, nephew, Wayne Page and her pet dog Fifi.

Dorothy is survived locally by a niece, Carolyn Dunn, nephew, Doug Browning and his wife Denise, niece Carla Browning and great-nieces, Danielle Browning, Amber Armuth and her husband Chris and new great-great nephew, Cade Armuth from Columbus, IN; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Browning along with several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews Close friend and co-worker. As per Dorothy's request she was cremated and no services will be held. The family would like to thank everyone at Wabash Christian Retirement Center for their TLC, compassion, enjoying her and treating her as an individual with respect. A special thanks to Mike Fields for sharing his time of devotional with her. Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
