Dorothy Anna (Steinkuhl) Brockett, 102, of Carmi, IL, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Wabash Christian Village in Carmi. She was born at home on November 27, 1920, in Evansville, IN, the daughter of Frederick Henry and Elizabeth (Diekmann) Steinkuhl. Dorothy was a 1939 graduate of Central High School in Evansville, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and chairperson of Student Council. She married Willard McCord Brockett Jr. on August 24, 1940 and their marriage lasted 46 years until his death on September 12, 1986. She moved with him to the family farm in Enfield, IL. where she was a dedicated farm wife and homemaker and also served as a Postal Clerk with the United States Postal Service office in Enfield for 25 years, during which she received numerous service awards. She moved to Carmi in 1987. Dorothy was a past member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Emmanuel United Methodist Church, and numerous service clubs. In her earlier years she enjoyed quilting and crafts, for which she won first place awards at the White County Fair and Enfield’s Mule Day. Dorothy also enjoyed reading, playing various card games and traveling, which included many states and Europe. More recently, she loved to read, play bingo, work on word searches, and watch the news, The Westminster Dog Show, Wheel of Fortune, ice skating, and old westerns.
Dorothy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Brenda (Pryor) Brockett of Rhinebeck, NY; a nephew, Ronald Steinkuhl of Darmstadt, IN; nieces, Judy Nall and Dorothy (Danny) Lantrip of Evansville; grandnieces and nephews; great-grandnieces and nephews; and great-great-grandnieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Willard, twin daughters who passed at birth, Patsy and Nancy Brockett; four siblings, George Henry Steinkuhl, Berthold Steinkuhl, John August Steinkuhl and Marie Katherine Aguirre and a half-sister, Katherine Hoffherr.
Funeral services for Dorothy Brockett will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with burial at Enfield Cemetery in Enfield, Illinois. Family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until time of service on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the White County Sr. Citizens Center or the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Food Pantry in Carmi, and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, who is in charge of arrangements.
