Biography

Donald A. Niemeier, 84 of Mt. Vernon, died Thursday morning, March 5, 2015 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born on January 6, 1931 in Marrs Township, the son of John and Margaret (Deig) Niemeier. He married Hildred Conrey on December 29, 1952 in Shawneetown, IL and she survives.

Donald was a member of the Mt. Vernon High School Class of "48" and proudly served on the reunion committee. He was a member of the M Club and the Hall of Fame, having lettered in 4 sports; and participated in Semi-pro baseball. He served in the US Army in Germany for 18 months and was a member of the Basketball and Softball teams. He was a member of the Owen Dunn American Legion Post #5. He was a loyal fan of Hoosiers and Aces Basketball. He retired from Countrymark after 43 years as the Foreman of Vehicle Maintenance. He loved to play Clabber. He loved his "Grandpups" Ginger, Tyra & Maddie.

He is survived by his wife, Hildred; daughters, Dee Ann (Ron) Sheffer and Karen (Jeff) Pharr of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Ryan & Taylor Pharr; and sister, Mildred Marx of Evansville. He was preceded in death by brother, Sylvester Niemeier and sisters, Isabell Niemeier, Cecilia Niemeier, Dorothy Ham, Marie Harp, Anna Cohoon, Lucille Ellsworth.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St., Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Military rites will be conducted concluding the service. A private burial will be held. Memorials may be made to Posey County Humane Society and Posey County Pound Puppies.
